Here is the Present Love Boat!

The RFA Cardigan Bay.

It was launched at BAE Systems Naval Ships shipyard in Govan, Glasgow on Saturday 9 April 2005.

It had been due to be launched the day before. There was a large invited crowd in the shipyard, and a few hundred people had gathered on the north shore of the River Clyde at Scotstoun. At around 15 minutes to the scheduled launch time four tugs, including Warrior and Shannon, started moving into position for the launch. However the ship manager decided that because of high winds and low water it was not safe to launch the ship, and at around 20 minutes after the scheduled time he decided to call off the launch for that day. There was an unusual north wind, which could have retarded the tide coming up the Firth of Clyde. They did go ahead with the naming ceremony, launching red, white and blue balloons and confetti from high on the ship, but by 2.30pm she was still dry and all the crew off.

They decided to try to launch it again at the next daytime high tide the following day. There was still a wind, but from the east, the river did look significantly higher. Another crowd gathered on the north bank, but smaller than the day before. Four tugs, including Warrior and Battler took up position. A small boat with a large red flag with the word "LAUNCH" on it took position up-river. Just after 2 p.m. the ship slowly slid down the slipway into the river, then she was halted by a large pile of chains behind her. The four tugs surrounded her, ready to take her to the fitting-out basin.

The ship was commissioned on 6 March 2007 in Portland Harbour. Local Sea Cadets assisted, whilst some more from Kent provided an honour guard. Also present was the Commodore of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The band present for the commissioning was The Light Cavalry Band, a regular Army band stationed in Bovington, Dorset.

Hi all, Well I am finally here, after a very interesting couple of days travelling!!

I went to work in a Navy Base in Scotland on Wednesday, finished there,jumped in a hire car and arrived in RAF Brize Norton about 9 hours later(yes I got lost)

Then had a 9 hour wait in a transit lounge for my flightout to Kuwait. On arriving in Kuwait, there was a 2 hour wait at the Military Airport forprocessing.

Then an hour transport ride to the transit tent city to stayfor a few hours, before being bussed back to the base for another flightdown to Bahrain, where my ship was berthed.

On arrival there, no one wasthere to meet me!! Managed to cadge a lift from some Yanks and they dropped me off at the ship. I finally managed to get to bed in my mess (four manmesses - pure luxury) at 2200 local time.

Nearly 2 days since I had lastbeen to bed......Nothing changes in the military then. Its currently 39 Deg C out here at the moment.

It is a nightmare to work onthe upper decks and you are constantly having to drink water to stopyourself dehydrating.

Working in this environment will be unbelievably hard. Just standing doing nothing, not even in full kit, saps your energywithin minutes!! I am on a ship which will be patrolling the Northern Gulf, around the Iraq / Iran border.

What with all the tension at the moment, we are in a slightlyhigher state of readiness.

We have a load of Yanks onboard at the moment. We will be doing boarding Ops with them soon.

I managed to grab a last weekend with the Hazel and the kids before I sailed, which was great.

Connor was fascinated with all my gear and wantedto play "armies" with me bless him.

Sunday 24th September - Victoria, British Colombia, Canada

Day one in Dry Dock.

Started at 0630 this morning, which was a shock to the system.

Today the main task was to rip out the server room and move all the servers into the Communications Office, whilst they upgraded the Air Conditioning system in the server room.

Easier said than done. These servers weigh a tonne! I had 7 to move, setup in the Communications Office & flash back up again. Finished about 10 minutes ago.

The whole ship looks like a disaster, which is normal for dry dock.

Its 2000 here now and I am just about to head off into down town Victoria for a meal.

Daryl here, all the way from Seattle. Lovely sunny day here, just sailed from the USA. Going upto Canada for dry dock.

We will be in Victoria, British Colombia, Canada for the next day days.

I will try and send you lots of pictures of the dry dock & the state of the ship! We are ripping it apart & its going to get crazy around here.

The pictures should be fun. I will also try and get some of the dock bottom. Right under the ship.

Well, I finally made all the way to Alaska. Hay its just like being in Scotland. It rains ALL the time. Oh apart from the time at the Glaciers when it was snowing.
Its so cold its unreal. Had to go out yesterday and buy a coat, some boots and hats to survive, as I had transferred from the Med in the height of summer. Now wasn’t that fun.

I have to admit, seeing a Glacier for the first time was pretty amazing. The sheer size of them is unreal. They call the blue ice. You can see by the picture why. It’s the most amazing colour of blue I have ever seen.

I had a stop over in New York on Thursday night. Didn’t do much except sleep!! Jetlag is great. Then on Friday morning I flew to Seattle. That was a cool flight. Over the North American Plains. There is NOTHING there!!! 5 hours of nothingness. In Seattle I meet my pal Chris and his wife. Chris comes from Scotland but now lives in the States. It was great to see a friendly face and catch up in yet another country this year. Chris & I have had a bit of a round the world tour this year!!

Its now Friday evening, or very early Saturday morning for you all. We are about 2 hours out of Victoria, BC, Canada. Never been to Canada ay before, so there is another first. We don’t sail until 0001 so its off ashore for a meal this evening I think. Looking forward to that.

GIMP PRODUCING FACTORY FOUND IN LONDON!

Hi My names Andrew,

& I work for www.myfactorylookslikeabombsite.com We are located just off the M25 at Junction 25 along the top, A10 Hertford road running up the right hand side (facing towards London) Waltham Cross on the extreme Left.

I work in the Building shaped like an L lying on its back. See the access to the farm building on the right, my office window is almost opposite that.

We produce all types of gimp stuff, and all the staff employed are right gimps. They only hire the biggest gimps, so I am very proud to be working here.

Tomorrow is the meeting of the model Fire Engine club and I am hoping to become actively involved in the running of the club.

Friday 4th August - Santorini Again

Hi all,

I was in santorini today. It is the most amazing island I have ever traveled to.

Managed to get ashore at 1200 and hired a jeep with 3 other crew members.

We hired the car from “Spiros” Dodgy motors ltd. It was an intensive hiring process, 40 Euros & the car keys were handed over. No paperwork no nothing……Dodgy!

We went to pick up our jeep & it wasn’t to bad to be honest. Brakes a bit spongy as they all are in Greece I think.

We drove away and noticed that the kind man had thought about us & not left any unwanted petrol in the tank. So 20 minutes of nursing fumes until we found a place to fill up, then it was into the main town.

The Island is on top of an old Volcano and the roads are on sheer cliffs. It is an amazing, if somewhat hair raising drive. Plus the fact that the average “Bubble” thinks that over taking on corners, and hogging the middle of the road, are the only 2 rules in the Greek “highway code” They are nutters!!

We had a fantastic meal over looking the sunken crater of the volcano, then it was off to the beach for a few chill out drinks, before back onboard.

It was a great day & I hope you enjoy the pictures.

In Monaco yesterday (Friday 21st) As you will all know it was extremly hot. We hit over 37 deg C as well.
I know I hear you say, we have that in the UK, but remember, I travel on a lovely Air Conditioned Boat & am not used to all the heat :-)

The Noordam anchored off Monaco at 1200 yesterday & the sail in was amazing. It always is. We anchored directly off the tunnel (Famous for the Grand Prix) and had to tender in this time. No alongside for us, which is a shame, as its much better.

At 1700, we all went ashore. Which is a struggle, with Mr Crackers AKA Connor not wanting to do anything that he is told, wear anything he has to & generally just being.....Connor. So after some fraught moments of dressing, we finally made it to the tenders.

He loved it! "I on a lifeboat Daddy" he shouted. Lauren loves it on the tenders & sat at the door & watched the waves & got some sun. He was waving "bye bye Daddys Boat" as the tender pulled away, waving vigourously. He was laughing and loving it.

The ride over was bumpy, but that just added to the fun the kids were having. "Weeeeeee" Connor would shout as the boat rocked. (I kept thinking about mums face when she got on a tender here in 04, I dont think she was shouting then, more gripping onto her seat for dear life - you know the face, the one she has in the front seat of the car, whilst pointing out the car turning 900 ft way, trying to say it casual...)

So we got ashore & decided to climb upto the Palace, which was directly above our tender landing point.
It was only 271 steps (Thankyou Lauren for counting them all out) Daddy had so much fun, Connor in one arm & the pram in the other. Oh and this after a run on the Prom deck in the afternoon.......Legs feeling a bit wobbly I can tell you.

To the top we got. There we saw the Choo Choo train that we wanted to take Connor on. So on we got and had a lovely 45 minute trip around Monaco. The Casino, all the shops that Hazel was eyeing....!
then it was back to Palace.

Then we tried to find somewhere to eat and decided to get the bus back down into town. Where we found a nice little cafe & had our tea & a glass of wine. Then it was back onboard for 9pm.

Lauren was off the tender before us & upto Club HAL for the last 30 minutes. We didnt even get a kiss. I took Connor back to the cabin & settled him down to sleep (sounds easy doesnt it) Hazel went up to watch a little bit of the show.

She met Lauren on the way down and the both went and did some of the Giant JigSaw we have onboard.

It was a lovely day. bye for now.

The world famous island of Santorini is the southern most island of the Cycladic group in the Aegean Sea, and is located 63 nautical miles north of Crete.

What an amazing place this is. Santorini is perched on the edge of an extinct Volcano.
It is my favourite place I have ever visited.
Santorini lies about 100 miles south east of Athens & is a Greek Island.

On Saturday, we all went ashore about 4pm and caught the Cable car up to the top of the mountain. Daddy really loved the cable car ride and smiled & waved all the way up…..yeh right. At the top, I met a couple of my pals from Club HAL. We had our picture taken & gossiped for a while then I had to leave, as my Daddy wanted to walk me around for hours!

Santorini is just cobbled streets and steeps – Thousands of steeps!! My little legs were so tired at the end of the day. My poor brother was just about done in at the end of the night and needed my Daddy to carry him around as he lost the use of his legs in the last hour!

We sat at an amazing restaurant perched on the mountain side. The views were great. We could see Daddy’s big ship & all the other ships in the bay. Daddy got lots of pictures, which he will be sending to you soon.

I had a pizza with my brother, Mummy had a lovely Pasta dish & Daddy had his Greek Salad (minus Tommy-art-o’s) and a beer. He was in heaven.

Finally we had to get back to the ship & to Club HAL. The sail away was great and mummy loved it.

We are having a great time onboard. I am writing this on Monday. Which we are calling “Connor in a bad mood day” as he has been grumpy all day & has been driving his mummy up the wall. He has just been taken out of the pool for not doing as he is told.

He is “Bad Boy” tonight & nothing he can do will redeem him. So he is happy as larry!!

Friday 14th July - Dubrovnik, Croatia

Hello Lolly here,

We went to Dubrovnik in Croatia yesterday and had a lovely time. I just wanted to go for a swim in the water, as you can see from some of my pictures.
We walked around the lovely walled town. Lots to see as you can see by our pictures. It got really hot & both Connor & I nearly feel asleep. Only the promise of a lovely Ice Cream when we got to the tenders kept us going.

We had a lovely meal in the summers sun, in a little Alleyway restaurant. Greek Salad for Daddy & lemon Chicken for Mummy. Connor & I just napped food off both their plates (they love that)

Then it was a little walk around the port. Ending up back at the tenders for the ride back to the ship. It was here we had a lovely ice-cream. Lovely thick Cream. I had Chocolate, Connor had Vanilla.

We are loving the ship. We have Club HAL, which is the Kiddies club. I love it there. It is Connors first time. He introduced the poor girls to “the real Connor” for a little bit. The mask of the little Angel slipped & Mr Crackers came out with a vengeance. Mummy & Daddy loved it, as they knew nothing about it.

Well Hazel & the kids got here safely.

They have been in the pool already & Mr Crackers has already had a tantrum at the Kiddies club, so things normal here!! It is great to have them onboard.

Lauren is having a ball already & has only been onboard for 1 day. Connor is eating lots of jelly & Lauren has Pizza coming out of her ears!!

We have just gone though the Straits of Messina, between Italy & Sicily. Tomorrow, we will be in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

There are photos coming, don’t you worry about that, lots being taken. We will be going ashore tomorrow.

Well in Naples, Italy today.

The day of the world cup final……..as usual we sail two hours before it starts! Would have been great to have been ashore in Italy to see them beat the French.

Will have to watch it in the Officers Bar I suppose.

Hazel & the kids join the ship tomorrow, they fly tonight. Evidently Lauren & Connor are the pictures of calmness at the moment……… Yeh right you believe that.
Hazel has two hyper kids on her hands at the moment!

I was going ashore today for some proper Eyetie food, but the network onboard must have heard I was going ashore for the first time in a week & decided to throw Its hand in. So I was up until 0200 this morning, then back up at 0600 or Oh my God its early O'clock to nurse it back to health. At 1140, it was not quite fit,
But could manage a few steps on its own, so I thought, great I will get ashore for my meal……Ah Ha! The network thought & crashed again.

So here I am at 1244 local time, with the sun beating down outside, on a glorious Sunday afternoon in Italy on the day of the World Cup Final & im grafting!

It's Dutch/American, so we smoke drugs and have wild sexy parties, and eat pancakes. No, only joking, although the pancakes are nice.

This was after the football I think, the old guy behind had just felt up my mate in the blue shirt. He liked it and was just asking for the guys number. I think I'm drunk..

July 1st - Monaco, Frogland..

July 1st 2006.

So where did you all watch the match? Me? I was in a little bar called the Stars & Bars in Monaco!
The sun was shining, the England were playing & the beer was flowing.

We got our seats early & in a good position to see the game on the screens. Suddenly, it was kick off.
Here we go. England to the Semi’s we thought.

The first half went by, we were not to worried. We were getting there slowly. But soon in the 2nd half,
The sending off of Rooney, spelt the end for England. We back ourselves into another corner.

Then came the dreaded penalties. The agony & ecstasy of seeing us score then miss.
We went out, once again in a shoot-out.

So after the game, we went to another bar for a beer. Sitting outside in the sun, watching Nelly Furtardo Live
In an open air concert just 50 yards away – which was nice. Then it was back onboard for sailing.

It was a great night, which would only have been better if we had won.
